Who Am I?
Barbara Yen Yoke Wah is born in Malacca, Malaysia in May 1946. She obtained her qualification in education from the College of Preceptors, Oxford, England. In 1972, she trained as a social worker at the University of Singapore and subsequently received her continuing education from the Schools of Social Work in USA and Canada.
She worked as a Medical Social Worker at the University of Malaya Medical Centre Kuala Lumpur from 1975 to 2001. She served in various Departments including Medicine, Paediatrics, Primary Care Medicine, Psychological Medicine, Eye and ENT and worked on issues of abused children, sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence, mental illness, disabilities and HIV/AIDS.
She presented papers and conducted workshops on these issues at conferences in Malaysia and other cities like Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney, Seoul, Beijing, Mongolia, New Delhi, Sri Lanka, Istanbul, Munich, Copenhagen and Vancouver.
Since 1967, she has been involved in various civil societies. Presently, she is advisor and counsellor to one of them and helps organise its para counsellor training course as well as its marriage education program.
Her passions are in advocacy in human and animal rights, environment conservation and world peace through inter-faith understanding.
